First-ever Water Awareness Month festival is on the way!

What a difference a year makes!

A year ago, all the water talk in the West was about the instability of the Colorado River system, the dangerously low levels that water stored in Lake Mead and Lake Powell were reaching, and about the vital importance of conserving our water supplies.

How A Productive Burst Of Winter Moisture May (Or May Not) Impact Drought In The Southwest

Recently Arizona Water News asked Arizona State Climatologist Erinanne Saffell, as well as Mark O’Malley, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service, to provide some expert analysis of the spate of early-to-mid-winter storms that have made for a surprisingly wet winter in the West thus far.

Arizona weather and climate experts report on the moisture conditions in the Southwest

As the saying goes, very few things in life are guaranteed. Nevertheless, that short list of life’s guarantees just got a wee bit longer:

The chances that the panel of experts that analyzes Arizona’s drought status would recommend a “drought’s over!” finding this fall were about as close to zero as you could get.

Following the Colorado River story: A primer on water terminology

The crisis on the Colorado River System is capturing the attention of the world. News accounts filled with mouth-drying terms such as “dead pool” and “system crash” have reached readers in Berlin, Mumbai, Tokyo and elsewhere. The image of a speedboat sitting upright in what used to be Lake Mead with its stern buried in the mud has illustrated literally hundreds of news accounts. And, then, there are the countless reports of the discovery of human remains revealed in the receding waters of Lake Mead. The eyes of the world literally are upon Lake Powell and Lake Mead.

With Third-Straight “La Niña” Likely, Drought Panel Recommends Continuing Drought Status

The State panel charged with making recommendations to Arizona’s Governor about drought status met early in May and concluded – to absolutely no one’s surprise – that Arizona remains locked in the chronic drought conditions that have plagued the Southwest for more than two decades.

Morning Scoop Panel Discusses Water Shortage Issues and Solutions Facing the Southwest

Water, as described at the start of a panel discussion Tuesday on Arizona’s water supplies, is “one of the hottest topics around.”

It certainly is. And for a lot of uncomfortable reasons, as people in the drought-plagued Southwest are learning.

A storm is coming

As Arizonans know, all those stories we tell the relatives and tourists about it being a dry heat is part truth, part myth.

Yes, the summer scorch annually enveloping us this time of year is typically dry. But not always.

The sweltering monsoon season – the time of year that gives lie to those claims about the allegedly tolerable summer temps in our desert regions -- is upon us.

And with it comes the rain – those often-sensational, often-intense, occasionally dangerous summer storms.

Water Resources joins Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake on tour of threatened Lake Mead

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake toured the Colorado River system’s drought-threatened Lake Mead area on August 31, meeting with federal and state water officials, including the Arizona Department of Water Resources.

“I was pleased to discuss with Sen. Flake the proactive response by Arizona to challenges associated with the Colorado River system,” said Water Resources Assistant Director Clint Chandler.

“Our conversation (at Hoover Dam) included references to our State’s contributions, and those of other states and Mexico, to the system."

Arizona and its Colorado River water

Historically and traditionally, Arizona has taken action to avoid water crises.

In the midst of the still raging 16-year drought, the state will be taking one more highly public action:

The Arizona Department of Water Resources, in partnership with the Central Arizona Project, is organizing a public briefing to inform water-users statewide about the complex challenges the region may face in coming years.
